foxinthestars: Two friends after a fight; Keith is bandaged and Burn offers a hand to help him up. (psychic force cute)
Last one!

Egad, this game is such left-wing propaganda. It seems to be obsessed with energy crises and with everyone being broke except for Wong, who cheats on his taxes and can buy all the toys in the world. Not that that bothers me, flaming liberal that I am, it's just kind of funny. (Might also be one aspect of its dated-ness, too.)

But anyway, Keith!

And that's the end! I'm going to put these all together and submit them to GameFAQs (ETA: You can see that here, sitting all alone...), and then try to figure out what to do with myself next... Hope you've all enjoyed them!

I got sidetracked this time when I found that this game is actually quite congenial to ripping sprites, so I got the ones from the story mode and submitted them to Sprite Database, too. You can see them here.

And now we come to Genma... Who might actually be the most distasteful character in this thing. (If he has any actual fans, I feel for them here, I really do.)

Next time, I'll be finishing things up with Keith.

In the meantime, I'm trying not to get sucked into the vortex of doujinshi-buying *too* quickly. Something in me really likes the quirky idea of becoming a collector of dojin for an obscure old video games series, and the ones that have already arrived do make me happy (they're like these art objects...), but it gets so expensive so fast...

My feminist sensibilities are barking at me right about now. Yes, there are two women in this game, one of them turns the whole town upside-down looking for a fashion accessory, and the other one freaks out over a guy. But they do talk to each other about something besides a man (in Wendy's game, about the aforementioned fashion accessory), so at least there's that...

(I know, I should just relax, give them agency and badass in some fanfic, etc...)

But anyway, all that aside, today is Sonia!

Next up is Genma---next to last one! And I don't know why yet, but it involves Wong being hauled off in a police car, so that ought to be worth putting up with the character no one cares about...

Today is Gates!

I think I need to slacken my pace a little, but I'll be back probably on Monday with Sonia.

The first batch of the dojinshi I was crazy enough to order also arrived today, so I'll have to nose around at those...

As a sidenote, Sprite Database has the in-game character sprites and some extras for Puzzle Taisen; although unfortunately they don't have the story mode cutscene sprites.

But anyway, today I reach the halfway mark with Brad!

Today is Wong's story, which was surprisingly high-stakes and exciting for a goofy little thing like this. I did have to wing it on some of his four-character proverbs, but I think I'm reasonably close...

Hell, I'd say it's pretty timely as I'm here in the middle of an unauthorized translation project. Seriously, if you go over to that little LJ-comm you'll find the approximately four people there posting rips and scans and screenshots and unauthorized translations, and this Psychic Force thing brings it home for me that in fandom, we should be aware of the legal lines as best we can, but I don't think we can draw a bright clear line around "transformative = good fanning; piracy = bad fanning,"---especially in the non-Western fandoms where getting access to the material to begin with might require going outside the legal bounds, and in any language you can get into situations where the source is out of print (and the ancillary materials way out of print), approaching a choice between "pirated" or "dead." Which brings me to the point that they're talking of breaking the internet essentially just to shore up somebody's dinosaur business model. Yes, we should find a way to pay artists a decent living and see that the kinds of media we love remain viable, but "piracy" also reflects new opportunities, and impulses and values that are worthy of respect. See the above "out of print" issue; the old way was notably bad at making the widest range of material accessible to the widest range of people, and I think most of us can acknowledge access to works of the mind as an intrinsic moral good.

So yes, we should stand up to these proposed laws because they'll hurt more than just the intended "pirates," but we --- especially we as fans --- should also challenge the whole narrative of "piracy." I yield the soapbox.

On a happier note, today is Wendy!

Wendy's Story, English and Japanese )

Next up is Wong's story---in which we find out what's wrong with that guy (and I get to deal with his penchant for Chinese proverbs; thank gods for Japanese Google...).

P.S: For cheap laughs, paste the transcriptions into Google Translate and see what it comes up with. Here’s its rendition of Wendy’s encounter with Genma:

Wendy: That's you? What is shaved and I saw on the sumo Katsuage. . . I'll not listen to rumors!

Until now the Nuuu, seeking eagle'll just fold Fuse! Lord also 有Ri金 your stingray at Yuke!

Wendy: If in a hurry. . . I need a little punishment?

(Game)

Wendy: The opponent has not shaved castor fishy smell.

P.P.S: In case anyone else wants to play along, this was my old-school low-tech redacting method (just replace square brackets with angle brackets): blackout text

This is the other one I had done already, last thing to post tonight, honest.

Up next is Wendy, who was delayed a bit by the technical difficulties over at the LJ-comm and such, but hopefully I'll have it in a few days.

P.S.: IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF THIS POWER!!

Well, I said I made that last post so I'd have the context to post these translations, and I wanted to step it up --- because two of them are already done. BTW, I am crossposting these from [livejournal.com profile] last_impact, the teeny tiny Psychic Force LJ-comm---which I have accidentally become the owner of because the previous owner was MIA (as in deleted and purged account) and I was the one who went and complained. 0_0

But anyway, Burn's Story! Are you ready for some football? 'Cuz he sure is!

It's that time again! Another After 0 story is translated and ready (for the zero people I know to be reading these, but I enjoy the accomplishment). In this one, the first in a long (long) running thread, a murdered man returns from the dead to bring his killers to justice --- in the body of his own infant son and with the assistance of his wife/mother. It's really kind of messed up.

As before, a zip with scans and translated script:

(If you find the link dead, leave a comment.)

And the script under the cut... )

Hope you enjoy it!

Other than this, though, I've been kind of a mess this week and have been dropping the ball on writing and other things after finally poking at the manga/light novel raw site a little too much and putting myself into a feeding frenzy; I really did have to go through the list to catch some of the stuff they had (somehow I hadn't thought to check for Gakuen Kino, and I hadn't even known there was a manga behind Space Family Carlvinson), but I also admit to downloading a bunch of vaguely-interesting-looking detritus that was probably unnecessary. I'm finally through it, though, so hopefully I can get back to normal...

Another After 0 story! In this one, a budding archaeologist puts it all on the line to solve the puzzle of an ancient hidden treasure! (And yes, I did translate the infamous newspaper panel as best I could.)

As before, the link leads to a zip with mediocre scans and a translated (rtf) script:
http://www.uploadstation.com/file/Zm6aJrt/after0_1-03.zip
(If you find the link dead, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.)

ETA: When I first posted this one, I forgot to include the script like I usually do, so here that is:

Maybe I shouldn't post this so fast, but wth, have another After 0 story!

This one is called "Manga Recommendations;" it's actually the last story in the volume, but I skipped ahead to translate it because I just had to know wtf. Now that I know what's going on, I can't quite decide if this story is really pretty fun or annoyingly self-righteous; for me it's apparently both. So what about you? What popular manga artist (or other comics artist) would you like to see transformed into a hideous monster? ---I swear to god this guy's name is a coincidence, btw.

You know the drill, half-assed scans plus translated (rtf) script:

(If you find the link dead, leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.)

This is the last After 0 story that I already had translated. There's one more that I had started on and will finish, although I've hit a little stumbling block; you see, the last panel looks like this:

after0_1-03-086000ref

And those are all real words, so I'd feel like I was copping out if I didn't try to translate them...

Once that story is done, though, I might try my hand at the first Allison novel...
foxinthestars: cute drawing of a fox (Default)
Well, I've mostly managed to boycott 9/11 retrospectives (present company excepted; my dwircle/flist is insightful as always). However, an attempt to make cake mix cookies was called on account of bugs. ::shudder:: I did make brownies instead without further incident, but won't eat any until tomorrow...

But anyway, I'm here with the second After 0 story, "REM: Point of Contact". I liked this one more than the first as it's a more down-to-earth kind of story. As a childhood friend is on her deathbed, a man begins having recurrent dreams about a trauma in her past---and a strong intuition that she is having these dreams, too. I get misty over the ending and think the artist used the silence there very well.

Anyway, same deal as the first one, zip file with scans that aren't trying very hard and a translated (rtf) script:
http://www.uploadstation.com/file/ESm2J9t/after0_1-02.zip
(If you find the link dead, post a comment and I'll see what I can do.)

The script is also under the cut...

Well, it's been a few days since I finished my 'fic. (The Allison & Lillia stuff is still, like, dancing on my head and I don't know what to do except ride it out for awhile...) Now for something different.

I've been trying to brush up my Japanese lately, and one way I'm studying is by trying to translate things that I would like to read. At "muddling through with a stack of dictionaries* and occasionally getting lost and just taking a desperate stab" level, I don't feel up to signing on with a scanlation group or anything like that, but my translations won't do anyone any good hoarded privately on my hard drive, so I thought I should at least share them with you all.

What I've got today is After 0 by Okazaki Jiro, a collection of sort of Twilight-Zone-esque sci-fi one-shots. Way back when I was a youngling, there was a Japanese-learners' magazine called Mangajin that I enjoyed very much and still mourn sometimes, and among the various things they reprinted were a couple of After 0 stories, and they're what's stayed with me the most. I bought the whole thing awhile back, and have slowly and sporadically been working on translating it as described above, so here for your perusing pleasure is the first story: "The Buddha Descends," in the form of rough scans with a translated script (rtf format).

http://www.uploadstation.com/file/YpsBca9/after0_1-01.zip
(If you try this at some later date and the link is dead, leave a comment and I'll try to refresh it.)

Sorry about the annoying uploader site link; a disadvantage of giving up my own web-hosting... I apologize also that the scans are crap, but I'll tell you why they are: these books are printed so tight into the spine that the only way to get really good scans would be to carefully cut the pages out (when there's a little sidebar at the end you will completely have to take my word for it), and I wasn't willing to dismember my keeper copies or put down the money for sacrificial duplicates, so I decided to just not worry about it. Translating straight prose would be easier in a way, since I could just put it up as blog posts; well, maybe later (since I did find raws of most of the Allison & Lillia stuff...).

And since I can at least post this much, here's the translated script:

The Buddha Descends )

I have a couple more of these almost ready and will post them soon, at least if anyone wants them.

*and by "stack of dictionaries" I mostly mean Rikaichan.
