A thought that’s occurred to me lately…

It seems like when I see transformative works that are acknowledged as “artistic” or similarly virtuous (not to mention legally legitimate), they always have this kind of hipster irony about them. They’re sort of a sly deconstruction, or they mix artistic/realistic registers so as to critique the illusion, or something like that.

And that kind of irony doesn’t particularly interest me.

Not saying it’s not valid and a valuable tool and a good stance for the people who are drawn to it, but I’m just not drawn to it most of the time, and I think fandom (fanfic-land), while inclusive of it, doesn’t have that kind of ironic default stance.

Which is good. Given that irony seems to enable the above-mentioned validation, to engage with the source unironically is courageous, IMO.

Of course, “unironic” does not mean “uncritical,” and it can offer its own kind of subversion. Irony seems to shoot above and below at the same time: it suggests a kind of intellectual superiority over the source but doesn’t presume to challenge it on its own ground. On the other hand, a fan-creator who engages unironically with the source is potentially claiming a position of equal seriousness and dignity with the original creators — looking them in the eye and saying “I am just as good as you and I have just as much right to shape this material in my own way.”

Which is pretty damn courageous and subversive. And personally, as a stance from which to create transformative work, I find it more interesting. (At least most of the time.)

Okay, you know that thing where you just can’t help writing fanfic for something that doesn’t actually exist yet? Like what happened with Free! and Miraculous Ladybug? (I almost got sucked into it with Ladybug, too — and then it turns out it’s going to be CG, very sad IMO…)

Yeah, that’s happening. The old Castlevania Diva is getting sucked into the excitement of IGA’s Kickstarter project, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and with me, you know what that means… (Although this is also a spiritual successor to Castlevania in a personal, artistically-onerous way as the stuff I’m picturing for it would probably work better as comics than prose.)

It’s probably a terrible idea, really. Anything I come up with now is sure to get Jossed as the actual game is developed, and at worst, if I come up with something I really love, I run the risk of ruining myself for the actual game, but I kind of can’t help it, and I figure if I record my ideas, I at least have a better chance of cannibalizing them for spare parts in later writing projects, so here goes, woot!

Ill-Advised Brainstorming )

Now I really should get caught up on all the Kickstarter updates and see how much I’ve been Jossed already…

EDIT TO ADD: Have a little backstory fan comic at tumblr! (Yes, IGA finally got me on tumblr.)

And that's a wrap! OnceFic stories are revealed, authors are revealed, and here are my results:

The story I received:

The Maiden and the Bear (2611 words) by within_a_dream
Fandom: Østenfor sol og vestenfor måne | East of the Sun and West of the Moon
Rating: General Audiences
Summary: When a talking bear appeared at her door to whisk her away, Anya knew her life would be changed. She could never have guessed how much.

And, at long last, the story I wrote!

Stardust Roses (13748 words) by foxinthestars
Fandom: Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot | Snow-white and Rose-red (Fairy Tale)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Characters: Schneeweisschen | Snow-white, Rosenrot | Rose-red, Mother (Snow-white and Rose-red), Bear (Snow-white and Rose-red), and kind of an AU interpretation of the dwarf
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Science Fiction, or maybe Science Fantasy, but anyway IN SPACE
Summary: Snow White and Rose Red live peacefully in the forest with their mother, but their earliest memories are of a different life: a blighted homeworld and a journey through the stars. A winter visitor and a falling star lead them on a journey to discover the truth about their home and about their own mysterious powers.

It ended up being the longest story in the collection, which makes me proud. I'm pleased with it in general, and the recipient seems to like it.

So, Success! I'm planning to do Parallels next. I really should try to get some non-exchange fic done, too, but for now I'm taking a break.

I have a complete draft of my Once Upon a Fic assignment! w00t!

Now I have about a week to revise this monster. ^_^;; (Yeah, I got a little carried away as to length. Apologies in advance to anybody I might ask to beta this.)

Lovely but not flawless.

Let's start out with that shiny new exciting and wonderful project of mine:

If Any Moment (Could Last Forever)... (7646 words) by foxinthestars
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Psychic Force
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Relationships: Keith Evans/Burn Griffith
Characters: Keith Evans, Burn Griffith, Ensemble
Additional Tags: Superpowered Fights, Grievous Injury, Melodrama, Realization of love, Telepathic Visionary Experiences, Happy Endings (or at least a pretty good chance), Love Can Save The World
Series: Part 2 of As Many Lullabyes
Summary:

Burn and Keith’s battle leaves them with only one moment together — but that one moment just might be enough.

Or: One Writer’s Crazy Attempt to Pull a Happy Ending out of Psychic Force 2012.

Also available at fanfiction.net.

There was a snag, though. I had set myself a personal deadline of February 14th, which is not only Valentine's Day but also lovable Psychic Force anti-villain Keith Evans' birthday. I worked hard and made the deadline --- and my recipient, MarsDragon, didn't get the notification. Wednesday or so I was finally like, "Did you see that?" and she was like "No," and I was like "::headdesk::". Note to self, announce things immediately...

But nonetheless I am proud of myself for the work I did on it. I'm oddly chill waiting for comments, but the nervousness I have feels special because I kind of let my hair down with all the melodrama and crack. I had a great time, though, and I hope people enjoy it. (EDIT: And now my recipient has commented and it's wonderful and I'm basking in it. ^_^)

(And huh, between Lullabyes and the sequel here, I have once again technically hit novella length. That seems to be my happy place.)

As if that weren't enough for a week in fanfiction, I myself got a very lovely surprise! [archiveofourown.org profile] tinypinkmouse recorded a podfic of my Snowpiercer drabble from Yuletide Madness!

The Shiver of Sacredness [Podfic] (11 words) by tinypinkmouse_podfic
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Snowpiercer (2013)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Namgung Yona
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Podfic, Podfic Length: 0-10 Minutes, Audio Format: MP3, Audio Format: Streaming
Summary:

Outside was greater than any drug Yona had ever tasted.

I'm all squee about this; I think podfic is really cool. As a former Librivox reader I've always had it in my head that I might do that someday, just not yet. But for someone who is doing it to pick me is quite squeeful.

Now I just got my OnceFic assignment.

Yeah, it's been a good week for fanfic.

Okay, Evening Tide is now fully posted at Ao3 and at FF.net. (BTW, Jo, most of the changes I made after you read it were just details, although I reworked the penultimate scene a bit.)

Now, I need to turn my attention to the companion piece I've been working on, which is set a few years later from Annie's POV. I've been having a good time, but my Annie-muse has OCD (with fair insight, mostly counting and symmetry with also some checking and magical thinking/bargaining going on), and working in her viewpoint can be kind of draining and fussy. I'm also nervous because it's like, I could screw this up so bad. Like, I want to portray her disorder with reasonable accuracy while on the one hand not reducing her to it and on the other hand not glossing over the challenges it puts on her. Also I might be infodumping too much. Ah, well, do the best I can and then go looking for beta readers I guess is the best thing to do...

I'm also thinking of doing like a DVD-esque commentary track on Evening Tide, like as an Ao3-exclusive bonus chapter, but doing the next story should be a higher priority, I think.

Anyway, in other news, a PSA: Open Library IS AWESOME. I'd known about it for awhile but just in the last little bit have tried actually borrowing books, and it is very cool. It works better if you get Adobe Digital Editions, though; I tried using the web reader and it kept getting "connection errors" and bouncing me back up to the top of the page which was annoying. With the Adobe thing, though, very nice.

The first book I checked out (and still have) is The Survivor's Guide to Sex by Staci Haines. I originally found it as somewhat-belated background reading for my fanfic, but dang, it feels like mental chiropractic just to read this thing. (As for that reason I found it, yes, I highly recommend it to anyone writing fanfic about Finnick Odair in a serious register.)

And it looks like I can get my Lloyd Alexander fixes there and save some car trips. I already tried out the Adobe app on The Truthful Harp (not a big favorite, but still).

Ahh, I'm happy. ^___^

Okay, I've started posting:

Evening Tide (5785 words) by foxinthestars
Chapters: 1/4
Fandom: Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Rape/Non-Con, Underage
Relationships: Mags & Finnick Odair
Characters: Finnick Odair, Mags (Hunger Games), original supporting characters, Ensemble Cameos
Additional Tags: Prequel, Angst, Sexual Abuse, Shunning, Contemplation of Suicide, POV First Person, Wordcount: 10.000-30.000, Families of Choice, Non-Graphic Violence
Summary: On the occasion of his third Reaping as a victor, Finnick reflects on his life and on the price of his victory. Caught between a Capitol that forces him to be its plaything and a District 4 that shuns him as a disgrace, he needs the love and guidance of his mentor to show him a way forward.

Also at FF.net

I ended up splitting it into four chapters (hadn't initially written it with that in mind, but I thought it might make it more readable), and I'll post the others maybe one a week.
foxinthestars: Photo of fox with bared teeth captioned "ph33r me." (ph33r)
Okay, here goes...

Crossposted to [community profile] betaplease:

Pen name: foxinthestars
Fandom: The Hunger Games (I work in an AU that only takes the first two books as canon)
Rating & Warnings: T or R - the sex isn't explicit and I don't think the violence is too graphic, but I do have sexual abuse, social rejection/shunning, contemplation of suicide, etc.
Length: ~26k
Alpha/Beta Type: Theme, structure, flow, worldbuilding, character... More macro-level than final polish type stuff. Canon-check (given parameters above). Some specific issues noted in the doc.
Harshness: I've been very nervous around this project, so a supportive tone is appreciated.
Formats: I can share on Google Docs or e-mail an RTF; let me know if you need something else.

Dark, angsty prequel from Finnick Odair's POV when he's 17 years old and his life has been thoroughly ruined. Mags plays a pivotal role. Other canon characters appear in cameos. Lots of supporting-cast OCs and worldbuilding, particularly around District 4.

Comment or PM me if you're willing to take a look. Thanks!

EDIT: Okay, I tried to do a proper summary:
On the occasion of his third Reaping as a victor, Finnick reflects on his life and on the price of his victory. Caught between a Capitol that forces him to be its toy and a District 4 that shuns him as a disgrace, he needs the love and guidance of his mentor to show him a way forward.

I need to post more, it's been like two months...

I've resigned as an Ao3 tag wrangler. I'll miss being the den mother for Castlevania and MST3K in particular, but I hadn't been keeping up on things like I should, and when I took stock I didn't feel like the job was really important to me, so it was time to pass the torch. They've been getting lots of new and energetic people in; I'm sure my babies will be in good hands.

Part of what brought it on is, I've been mobbed by plotbunnies lately, so mercilessly that I've been having trouble getting much of anything done except writing. As I've told a couple of people elsewhere, my bitching about The Hunger Games turned creative and spiraled out of control. In a way it feels great, but I have been badly disorganized, and also the writing is like, way out of my comfort zone.

My process has been unusual this time; I've been writing stuff as it comes in non-linear chunks and trying to prune and massage it all into place later as the story takes shape more. Also, apparently I enjoy writing things that are really freaking dark and I haven't been at peace with that fact for years (which is probably unfortunate because past evidence suggests that I'm really good at it). With the Hunger Games, yeah, it's both a license and practically an obligation to go really freaking dark --- on some things I don't want to and/or don't think I can capture the canon's level of grimdark, but on other things, I might be even worse, so I just hope it all works out.

At any rate, I'm uncommonly terrified. I'm having a blast on my own, but my brain keeps wanting to weasel out of sharing. "Maybe I should sit on Mildly Related Prequel until Huge Rambling AU Sequel is completely done." "Maybe I should sit on it until I re-read the relevant books from cover to cover for enough canon-check to prevent any possible embarrassment." "About that Mildly Related Prequel, I don't have to mention who the viewpoint character is and what it's about, do I? At least not yet? That seems really scary. OMG, if I even mention what all the trigger warnings are people could probably guess and the title is a dead giveaway..." "Maybe I could just post it somewhere anonymously..."

It doesn't help that my last time working with a YA Bestseller was Harry Potter, where I had a similar sort of canon-apostate fixer-upper-AU project, and I love the stuff I did and would like to get back to it sometime, but it ended up being kind of a harsh and lonely experience. Harry Potter canon still triggers discomfort for me (which is both embarrassing in itself and downright inconvenient because the thing is so damn huge).

In bad moments I've had to re-fight one of the very first lessons I learned in my JFW days (no really, it's okay to write as if your favorite characters are your favorite characters). And you know, it's a pain in the ass when the fanfic-writing brainweasels start questioning your sacred right to make shit up about canon characters/settings/etc.

I'll have to deal with this sometime soon and go looking for supportive alphas --- I almost have a completed draft of Mildly Related Prequel --- but for now I just wanted to own up to what's going on with it.

Oh, yes, I never did post about how this past Yuletide came out.

I received a lovely story based on Uchouten Kazoku:

Wishing Well (3160 words) by augusta_brie
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: 有頂天家族 | Uchouten Kazoku | The Eccentric Family
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Shimogamo Yajirou, Shimogamo Yasaburou, Shimogamo Yashirou, Shimogamo Yaichirou
Additional Tags: idiot blood, Family
Summary: Each brother has taken a turn visiting Yajirou's well.

And I wrote a Moribito story:

Ao3 link and commentary )

Now someone wrote me a New Years' Resolution story that I've procrastinated about reading in an unconscionable manner. I'm better at giving than receiving in these things... -_-;;
foxinthestars: cute drawing of a fox (Default)
Yup, close to two months this time...

Yesterday was my birthday. I got money from my parents, and Jessie and Jo sent the Devil Survivor 2 game (so I can find out if the anime really is lame by comparison ^_~ ), and the Moribito full series box, which is awesome.

Coincidentally, as my monthly back-catalog indulgence, I had just finished re-watching Kemono no Souja Erin, which was still also awesome, and in general I think I need to re-watch things I like more often. cut for some remarks on the re-watch, with spoilers )

On current anime, I might have just taken the season to rest. I never did go back to Servant x Service, and I'm a few weeks behind on Sunday Without God and Free! Makai Ouji: Devils and Realist is still just shameless fluffy fun. Uchouten Kazoku is by far the best thing I'm watching, combining Tanuki and Tengu hijinks with surprisingly grounded family drama and subtle storytelling.

Since last writing, Parallels has also gone live and had its author reveals. Chaco made me some illustrations for Seven Year Promise, and my recipient skyshores' requests nudged me to re-watch Kiki's Delivery Service, which was good since I had totally forgotten what an amazing movie it was. I also had fun making a treat for Oryx based on Hyouka, and I got very gracious comments on the stories I wrote, so I'm happy. Cut for links to the stories I wrote. )

My monthly 'fic is the bit of Natsume Yuujinchou fluff I wrote some time ago:

Never You Mind (982 words) by foxinthestars
Fandom: Natsume Yuujinchou | Natsume's Book of Friends
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Natsume Takashi, Madara "Nyanko-sensei", Fujiwara Touko, Fujiwara Shigeru
Additional Tags: Fluff, cheap gag, responsible pet ownership
Summary: While Natsume is away, a hangover gets Nyanko-sensei into some trouble and reminds the Fujiwaras of their responsibility as cat owners.

Also on FFN.

When I saw this one was coming out right on the cusp, I made sure to bring it in under 1,000 words so that it wouldn't count against the Yuletide threshold. Was that wrong...? ^_~

I've actually got myself in a bind now; I've fallen down on writing long enough that I don't have anything ahead for June. Have to get back to it and drabble something at least...
foxinthestars: Photo of fox lying in snow captioned "Mleh." (mleh)
::collapses::

Okay, Seven Year Promise is now completely posted (on Ao3 and on FFN). I may never do a weekly release schedule like that again; that was unexpectedly taxing. I totally should have predicted that I would mess around with every chapter right down to the wire, but somehow I didn't, so yeah. I still love it, but it's nice to be done.

(And yes, this so totally counts for April.)
foxinthestars: cute drawing of a fox (Default)
Okay, last post I mentioned I had another NY fic that I was letting rest, and that I had two complete versions of it. Well, after letting it rest awhile, I actually don't think either version is bad, and I could use a fresh pair of eyes to tell me "better one, better two?" I'm nervous as usual (with a bit of sympathy for comedians who never know if something works until they try it on other people), but that really seems to be the next step on this one, so if anyone doesn't mind a cheap gag at Nyanko-sensei's expense...

Two versions, each about 1000 words... under the cut )

This coming Sunday is also when I plan to start posting Seven Year Promise (I ended up dividing it further into four parts, and the plan is to post the first one Sunday and one per week after that).

foxinthestars: cute drawing of a fox (Default)
Been awhile, lots of random babbling...

I mentioned awhile back that doing Natsume Yuujinchou fic is breaking a long-established pattern for me (in that my favorite character is not being as horribly savaged by the bunnies as I'm used to), and now I'm finding it's breaking other patterns, too. For one thing, I'm not making any effort to come up with an over-arching headcanon on this one. Usually when I get obsessed with something I construct an elaborate personal myth-arc for it which I then only self-consciously depart from, but this time not so much. Mirror's Depth is my headcanon for Matoba and will probably stick where relevant, but now I've got Seven Year Promise, which I still just love, but after it I'm willing to just go on and write whatever strikes my fancy and whether it happens in the same timeline as 7YP, I don't really care; it would just be a matter of the new story's convenience. (And actually, I don't care whether Mirror's Depth and 7YP are in the same timeline; they have no characters in common so it just doesn't matter).

I'm also finding myself doing at least a little bit of actual revising on this stuff. Revising is a weak point for me, I admit; I'm such a perfectionist that I generally can get something presentable on the first try (knock on wood) and then I tend to just fuss around the edges, but now... I'm still working on revising 7YP (no one but Branch has read it AFAIK, so I'm just doing the best I can; if you want to have a look, I would appreciate it, but just LMK and I'll send you the RTF, I'm sick of updating posts every time I change it), and yesterday I did actual revising as in "Hm, I could make a stronger narrative decision than this. Check the logistics... Yeah, I'm gonna re-do this whole scene and make it happen different." (Spoiler: for complicated reasons, Natsume will die if he gives back my youkai guest star's name before we resolve things, and we can't tell him what's going on, which leads to Tanuma stealing the Book of Friends; originally I just had him do this while Natsume was asleep, but in the new draft, he tries telling Natsume in a general way not to return the name yet, backs off in the face of Natsume's reaction, and then has to walk out with the Book right under Natsume's nose; the original version was kind of cute in its way, but yeah, the new one is a stronger narrative decision I think.) After 7YP, I promised myself I could write some fluff, so I have a little 1000-word thing that amounts to a cheap gag --- and I have two complete versions of it; in the first one I used the context/set-up in which the idea first came to me, then decided that made it too heavy and re-wrote almost the whole thing (I'm gonna let that one rest for a little longer; it amounts to a cheap gag and I've fussed with it enough I can't really tell if it's funny, but LMK if you want to see it).

This makes me kind of proud.

And anime. The season's winding down; only going to comment on a couple of things right now.

The last act of Shin Sekai Yori is actually getting good reviews, and I probably will have to finish it sometime. If I'm honest, it's not that I don't care, it's that I care too much. My rants about it were probably just self-protective hackling to some extent --- but at the very least, they will always stand as a testament to what a hard ride that show is.

Also, one of the ones I've been looking forward to in the upcoming season, RDG: Red Data Girl, was previewed online and fansubbed, so I got to see ep. 1, and it's not blowing me away yet, but I'm in for now. Part of what was so promising about this one is that it's based on novels by Ogiwara Noriko (Dragon Sword and Wind Child, Good Witch of the West), and "based on a novel" seems to be a good sign for anime. It's slowly hinting so far, but the basic setup is the heroine, Izumiko, who is some kind of destined medium of divinity/spiritual power, and the hero, Miyuki, who is her destined guardian (kind of like Hiiro no Kakera but it plays better; HnK hit an unhappy medium for me where the otome game basis was painfully obvious but not shamelessly brazen like in Amnesia). The big thing that strikes me in episode one is that the lead characters are very immature, each in their own way, and it's a bit irritating to watch but very understandable given their circumstances. Izumiko has been smotheringly sheltered her whole life and so has arrived at this point mousy and uncertain --- the huge deal everyone makes about her cutting her fringe is ominous on two levels: both as a sign of how constricted her life is and a hint that we're in a story world where this really could have momentous consequences. Miyuki for his part gets dragged in and told that he's destined to be Izumiko's servant; his reaction of "fuck that noise, she's ugly and stupid" goes right to the point of being childish (as the show subtly but effectively points out), but is quite understandable given what was just done to him. As I said, it can be uncomfortable to watch them at this point, but the show seems very aware of their immaturity; I sense a real promise of watching them grow, and at least for now I'm looking forward to it.

(The other one that looks promising to me is Karneval, but really won't know about that one until I get to see some.)
foxinthestars: cute drawing of a fox (Default)
So I'm still watching the Amnesia anime for no good reason. We're past boyfriend #4 --- sadly we didn't get to see her knee him in the groin and call the cops, but at least we're done with the creep --- and into boyfriend #5-and-implicitly-final who actually seems to know what the hell is even going on so we have some chance of actually getting somewhere. Lately, tho, this anime has made me wonder about some things. For example whether I'm the only one who a) thinks the romance in Ikki's arc was basically him talking to himself and b) would like to see his curse rebound directly on him and his fangirls tear him apart in some sort of bacchanalian frenzy (I don't hate him as much as it sounds like, I'm just fascinated by the idea and annoyed by the catfight tropes).

More importantly, though, I'm wondering if the whole idea of "leave this character blank for the audience to self-insert" ever even works. It sure doesn't here, the heroine just comes off as a milquetoast and the only time her lack of personality is at all involving is when it's implied that she wasn't always like that and you can sense what she's lost. The other example I can think of was in a medium where it would seem much more likely to succeed --- in my youth I played Lunar: The Silver Star in the original Sega CD version, and in it, the hero, Alex, was pretty much left as a blank while the rest of the party was given tons of personality, and I remember even at the time it didn't help me become Alex, it just turned him into the least interesting character. Now, I admit, I've never played an otome game (of the kind Amnesia is based on) to say whether it works there, but the visual novels I have played and liked didn't leave the hero as an empty vessel...

Other random things, I watched my monthly back-catalog anime, wanted something relatively short and light this time and picked Otome Youkai Zakuro. It was fun.

Also I've finally finished another pass through Seven Year Promise and updated those posts.

I have posted this on my DW, so some of you will have seen it before, but I still like it.

Okay, here goes! The first half of that epic fic I've been working on. (Still going over the second half, should have it up soon.)

EDIT: The story is now on Ao3 and FFN

OMG you guys. I have a draft. An actual complete draft of the epic Natsume Yuujinchou fic. It came in around 28,000 words, and I want to go over it once before posting, but I should be able to show it off within a few days. Could still use work in some places, but that's why it's called a draft, and I'm giving myself a month to revise it...

Also, today's Unlimited episode, because it vexed me.

spoilers and stuff )

Other than that, it was awesome as usual.
