Things seem to be better now; I got the computer up in Safe Mode, used a System Restore point, and installed Norton 360. Still nervous, but I'm back, and am no longer at the "take it to the shop" point.

I'm glad to hear things have gotten better! I saw this post before the post about viruses, so consider this my "yikes, good luck!" comment as well. :)

Thanks! I'm regaining my sense of safety now. Worse yet, this is one that popped up as a fake antivirus, and I think it might have interfered with Firefox somehow --- it lost all my saved log-ins in a suspicious manner, so the first thing I did when I got online with Mom's computer was change a bunch of passwords. But yeah, it can leave you paranoid about clicking anything for awhile...
