Possible sign of healing

For the first time since I moved back here, I've been knitting. Haven't gotten back to spinning although I got the folding Kromski wheel; at some point I realized that I wasn't sure what to do with my handspun once I had it and roving seemed no less expensive than yarn. But still. I had been wanting something to do with my hands while I watch videos, and I think the hiatus did involve some pain that it's about time I got over.
I just finished my first project, simply knitting a skein I still had stashed into a simple scarf, which my Mom loved and laid claim to, since I didn't have any purpose in mind for it.
What I made was just a simple seeded rib scarf with a chain selvage, like this:
Cast on [(multiple of 4)+3] stitches using crochet method.
All rows: s1 as to knit, *k3, p1; repeat from * until 2 sts remain, k2.
Bind off with knit-in-pattern method.
(Actually, I didn't have the presence of mind to add the extra half a repeat so that every row would be worked alike, but essentially like this.)
Now I have a stash of sock yarn and a desire for split-toe socks (I just don't like going barefoot, so without them there would be no point in trying to make nuno-zori). However, I unfortunately misplaced my collection of DPNs somewhere and could only find size 1s. A shopping trip today yielded only the Boye Aluminum 2s and 3s from Wal-Mart and, well, they're shit. The tips are noticeably eroded after one gauge swatch, but they'll suffice until I get something decent---I'm actually a bamboo/wood person when it comes to knitting needles (although my Boye-induced suspicion of metal needles might have kept me from giving the nickel-plated speed-style enough of a chance). There are a few actual yarn shops I might be able to get to soon, but I'm also tempted to order a set from Knitpicks. Any other knitters on my f'list, any recommendations for sock needles? (Or tabi-style split toe sock patterns? I found a few, but can't hurt to ask.)
I am also feeling the pull of swirling temptation to try making Temari balls (they say the Kiku/Chrysanthemum style is basic but it's so beautiful!), but I'm trying to hold it off for now...
