Birthday and more
Aug. 30th, 2014 05:44 pmWednesday was my birthday! Sis and sister-in-law sent me an MST3K box set and a Brene Brown book, which was cool, and parents gave me money.
I'm still deciding what to do with said money. I'm tempted by an ultraportable laptop (looking at one that's about $300), but that might just be recklessly spendy and I'm not sure how much it would really improve my life. I do think it would be more my style than a tablet, though. I guess I'm too much of a writer; since I fell off the Puzzle & Dragons wagon, I don't see the point of a computer-wannabe device where I can't just plug in a USB drive and start typing away on something...
I finally finished reading the sporking of the Hunger Games trilogy that I linked to. In some places I think the writer was overly negative and jumped to uncharitable conclusions. Some of the criticisms I had already formed at least partly on my own (like the heteronormativity and all-around f***ed-up take on romance), others are new and maybe I don't agree with them. I would say it gave me a new appreciation of Johanna (probably too late for her in my headcanon, tho). And it pointed up just how exhausting and demoralizing book 3 was.
On the writing front, I'm drafting more Hunger Games fic, albeit more haltingly than I was for a while. With Evening Tide, the one advance reader found a couple of detail errors but mostly said it looked great (thanks, Jo!), and I think it's time to give up on finding more betas and just do the best I can and post it.
