Follow-up, books on the way
Jul. 16th, 2011 11:49 amFollowing up from yesterday; I haven't gotten to the last 4 episodes of Haibane Renmei yet (although I intend to do that today), but I did watch 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was, by turns, richly bizarre, painfully slow, and inevitably quaint*, and the sound and music were on some kind of crack. I wouldn't call it so much "bad" as "artsy," though, and it's definitely worth seeing for its place in sci-fi/cinema/cultural history (especially if you're a MiSTie; I get jokes I never got before, including the opening sequence of the MST3K movie and the Comedy Central Finale).
I also meant to mention yesterday and forgot, I decided to treat myself at Amazon and have a few books coming. I always enjoy Gabor Mate when he's on Democracy Now!, so I got one of his books (When the Body Says No), got the first Jaime/Locas volume in the Love and Rockets Library Series, and the first volume of A Bride's Story (I let Emma go out of print on me; I'm not letting Mori-sensei get away again).
Sunday I'm thinking of going to the indie theater in the old college town to see Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
*Yes, they predicted space travel and highly-advanced AI but did not predict the VGA monitor or the cultural rejection of plaid business suits; that stuff is always quaintly amusing.
