Reading, watching
Jul. 15th, 2011 12:33 pmDuring NaNoMango, reading/watching/playing things got pushed to the side, and now I'm getting back to it.
I hadn't watched anime in awhile and wanted to, so on a recommendation from IIRC
seirai, I started Haibane Renmei and am about halfway through it. I'm enjoying it; it has that combination of down-to-earth and fantastical that I tend to like, plus frequent tear-jerking (at least for me, but I should admit that I tend to like that, too).
After reading a bunch of nonfiction, I thought it was time for a novel, and am also halfway through Dragon Sword and Wind Child. I had bought it awhile back after seeing it mentioned in the same breath as Moribito one time too many, and while I wouldn't say it's rocking my socks as much as Moribito, I am enjoying it. (A lot of the people mentioning it also had childhood memories of a previous English translation, which I didn't have, might be part of it, if I feel like it was a little over-hyped.)
I happened to go in the Library the other day, and they had the first two volumes of Prince of Tennis, which I'd also overheard enough love for to check it out, and I'd say it's fun, but not the kind of thing I would fall in love with. I also checked out a GN called "Cat Burglar Black," but after skimming through it, decided not to bother with it, and in their DVD section they had 2001: A Space Odyssey, which I need to watch. I don't necessarily expect to like it, but it seems like one of those things one should see to understand its influence on the culture and get all the references, if nothing else (yes, a MiSTie who hasn't seen 2001; this should probably be remedied).
I have such an insane number of books; I need to read some of them and weed some of them out...
And the last Harry Potter movie coming out. I've actually never seen or wanted to see any of the movies. I suppose it's my own fault for being a crank, but every time since book 6 there's been a canon release I re-experience that feeling of lonely, jeremiac frustration. Well, this might be the last time. (I do need to get back to my fanfic eventually, but I want to focus on the CV and FY stuff first...)
PS: Those who saw my previous f-locked entry, I haven't heard anything on it since then, so apparently nothing came of it, but at least I tried.
