Random thoughts: Politics
Aug. 24th, 2010 10:16 pmIn the interest of offering random thoughts about something.
If I say that politics is an addiction for me, I'm not kidding. It's not good for me, it's a good way to blow a lot of time to no good purpose, and it's hard for me to quit even if I want to. (I have been cutting back lately; I can usually keep myself off Crooks&Liars now.)
There was a time when I talked a lot about politics on my blog, but although I still have very strongly held opinions and beliefs about it, now I feel like I don't want to talk/write about it, like I don't want to be a crank, if that makes sense. Geez, I'm even a secretive politics-drunk.
Being a pretty radical liberal/progressive, I also didn't really expect when the people I voted for actually won that politics would become more frustrating and repulsive---for the timidity of my own side as well as the attacks from the other side. File me under "disillusioned Obama supporter," I guess. I can only imagine that the preceding generation of Liberals went through this with Clinton (what with DADT, NAFTA, DOMA, welfare reform, etc).
I think the next step should be to try to kick the Olbermann/Maddow habit; it just takes too much time out of weekday evenings. I have decided a daily check of Democracy Now! gets to stay (told'ja I was a Liberal), but I usually just read the headlines and only watch it if it looks especially interesting.
Something else I will say and don't always do: if one must read political sites, don't look at the comments; they're a swamp. So instead of this, I should try to find a hobby where hanging out on forums for it is actually halfway appealing. Perhaps easier said than done...
