Recording fail with bits of success
Mar. 2nd, 2010 02:36 pmI did get back to work on my Saturn Symphony game. And it was quickly confirmed that my bat sonar did not work; I could see it bounce off the walls, but couldn't see the part that would actually kill me if I touched it. So I went with my first backup idea, used the PlayStation save to plan it out, and floated through as a mist without any trouble. I'm very nearly done with the normal castle; I only need to fight the Succubus, fight Maria (this being the Saturn version), then fight Richter. Actually since this was just about my last chance to see the worst ending, I went ahead and did that today.
Why I put the Succubus off until now is anyone's guess; I've been right next to her room and just left it for later, although I did leave a save there to try something out. I had heard that if you were killed by the Succubus, the Game Over screen would have different audio in the Japanese version, and it turns out that this is true; instead of "GAME OVAH MWA HA HA," you hear the Succubus say something. After much futzing around I was able to record an audio clip of it (but having given up my webspace, I don't really have anywhere to park the file to share it here) and as best I can tell, what she says is "Saa, futari de eigo no yami wo samayoimashou," which would mean "Let us two wander the eternal darkness together." ...... ::shudder::
In general I would have liked to record bits of the Saturn playthrough, but the technical aspects just won't cooperate. My emulator (Yabause) has a "record AVI" function, but the video is broken, just a jumbled image of the lower-left quadrant of the screen. The audio is okay, though, and I found a little piece of freeware that would rip a WAV or MP3 from the AVI, so that's how I got my Succubus audio clip. I also tried outside screen-recording software, but apparently my sound card doesn't have a line that something like CamStudio or HyperCam can record from, although the video comes out okay. So in effect I can record video or sound but not both together. This is a deal breaker for sharing stuff on YouTube (I actually searched there for the rumored alternate Game Overs from SotN, there's the Succubus and supposedly one other, and couldn't find if anyone had put them up), but for my own uses it might be enough, like if I recorded the cutscenes with no audio, it would still give me the Japanese text if I wanted to try translating it, and with those alternate game overs, the audio is what I really wanted anyway.
The other thing I did is finally go through the Underground Garden (three rooms plus a really ugly boss), and while more inspired than the Cursed Prison, it still just seemed tacked-on and substandard. In general, while I enjoy getting to see it for my own geeky curiosity, what I'd say about the Saturn-only content so far is that if you haven't played it, you're really not missing much of anything.
