Jan. 23rd, 2015 12:10 pmYuletide was so much fun this year, I thought I wanted to do more fanfic exchanges, so I'm currently getting ready for Once Upon a Fic (DW/LJ). My planned nominations: Willie of Winsbury (ballad; link to video), The Forest Bride (collected in the book at the link), and The Frog Prince.
I took the week off from the doll because I had other things to do, but I'll try to get to work costuming it next week.
I can tell I've been pulled back into the Psychic Force orbit --- I'm ordering doujinshi again. I like to think I'm choosier than the first time around, but one of the Japanese shops I used to haunt had a couple that counted as emergencies, and you know while I was ordering anyway... I'm even trying adventurously to be a big girl (also save money) and use Tenso's package forwarding instead of a full-service deputy shopper, so I placed the order on my very own. Still waiting for it to go through and hoping everything works... (It's funny, I've never bought and don't especially want doujinshi for anything else, but with Psychic Force, I'm a sucker for the stuff.)
I decided to take a pass on Call the Midwife for now, but I did watch Patema Inverted. My verdict in short: Good, but not Great. The characters don't really rise above stock (and IMO they shouldn't have made the opening scenes so reminiscent of Nausicaa if they couldn't back it up --- seriously, it's to the point I have to think it was done knowingly), and the sci-fi conceit gets a little confusing toward the end. But if the characters aren't unique they are at least likeable (where appropriate), and the themes of flight, vertigo, and appreciating other people's perspectives are nicely handled. Fun and definitely worth seeing, but not a classic.
Next up in my movie queue: The Bicycle Thief. I'm going through my library's rather nice collection alphabetically, with digressions for the one-week shelf and occasional other things that catch my eye. A was Branagh's production of As You Like It, which didn't do too much for me. Looking ahead to the Cs I have my eye on Close Encounters of the Third Kind; I saw that once as a kid and just found it baffling, so I'm curious what I would make of it now. (I also remember the Garfield and Friends cartoon where they were cataloguing all the Kinds of Close Encounters. "The 87th kind, that's when the alien does your laundry...")
