Yes, that felt good...
Apr. 28th, 2012 10:30 pmI did do my anime marathon Friday night, and I ended up going with "No. 6." (Thanks to
branchandroot for the suggestions, the others are filed away.) I enjoyed it; the shounen-ai element was deliciously shameless, and I did like how the gender roles got juggled around. On the other hand, at some point the main female character is stripped of all agency and indeed all personality save being hung up on a guy, which is nothing new but all the more annoying for it (and for what a fun character she started out as). The revelation of the sci-fi conceit lands with just kind of a dull whump and important parts are never sufficiently explained, but it couldn't really hold a candle to the character dynamics anyway so I was willing to let that go, and the ending was rather cursory but in no way actively bad. Of course, I always have an easier time putting flaws into words than strengths, but I do recommend it for fun characters, a great relationship between the male leads, and meditations on ethics and the roles and facades people use to survive but with humanity still there underneath.
As a marathon it was actually not all that strenuous. If I want to stretch myself doing that, I'll need a series that's longer and/or more intense. Still not doing Natsume Yuujinchou that way, I want to savor the mistiness... Thinking of the 24-ep-or-so things I had filed on my to-watch list, Gankutsuou is also a no, you'd go freakin' blind... Well, maybe I'll pick something some other time.
More importantly, tho, the marathon finally got me off my butt to sign up for a Crunchyroll subscription ($7/month it really seems quite cheap) and generally jump-started me back into watching more stuff. I could even watch Bleach or Naruto now if I wanted, but I'm not ready to invest the time. Looking at the new simulcasting stuff I could take advantage of, I enjoyed Folktales From Japan, and Branch was right, Kuroko's Basketball is awesome; at least in the first episode I love how there are so many different kinds of strength on display there. On the other hand, I tried Dusk Maiden of Amnesia, but the opening scene was so tiresome I gave up on it within minutes.
Still, it feels good...
