Shinkenger is miffing me off, just a little. They're having a crossover with Kamen Rider Decade, which I'm not watching; I'm going to just go on without worrying about it and have faith that I won't miss anything crucial, but really, that was annoying as hell when superhero comics would do it, and it's still annoying here. It's a little hard to warm up to ShinkenGold because he's such a goof. Most importantly, ShinkenYellow (Kotoha) is losing out to ShinkenRed (Takeru) as my favorite ranger, partly because my initial read on Takeru proved right, he's not really a cold-hearted jerk, just an overburdened perfectionist, which issues I can relate to. It might not be happening, though, if Kotoha weren't getting shafted; she never gets to do anything cool, her Land Slicer is apparently the designated Attack That Never Works (and possibly makes things worse), they seem to have completely forgotten that when we met the team she was perhaps the best fighter after Takeru, and in the last episode I watched, rather than giving her the customary showcase, they just about killed her and made her sit the whole thing out like a damsel. It's getting frustrating.

In a different and more off-color vein, especially since Ooku vol. 2 I've been thinking that in a TV Tropes snarky kind of way, it might be profitable to figure out the "Sorting Algorithm of Rape Probability." Toward the extreme end, say, if in a work of fiction you are a solitary female virgin "wholesome crossdresser" sneaking away from overbearing parent/authority figures into an unfamiliar place where the people are of markedly lower socio-economic class than you (not adjusted for inflation), I'd estimate your chance of suffering attempted rape or other sexual exploitation at about 93%, higher (and much more likely successful) if the creator is going for "grit." Seriously, sometimes it just gets ridiculous.

Finally, of all things, I've been thinking about my old Fushigi Yuugi alt-verse lately. I have a lot of trouble accepting when my Dead Fic is dead. I haven't watched the original in over ten years, and being that it was kind of a primal trauma in my fandom life (these days I pretty much expect that things are likely to jump the shark, but that was the first time it had happened to me with anything like the intensity; I felt so betrayed that still to this day I won't touch anything with Watase Yuu's name on it), re-watching it is probably out of the question (although in fairness, the more of the canon we discarded the better it seemed to get), it's lay dormant so long and we left little enough notes that I forget a lot of what we had planned (might be better to start over anyway), and while I have little compunction about continuing it on my own without Kati (my now-estranged co-author for that), it's old enough work that even re-reading the earlier parts of it could smart with embarrassment. It seems like the reasonable thing would be to just let it go, but somehow I can't quite do it, and fascinating ideas for it, bits of backstory and world-building, bubble up in my brain from time to time... (I had an idiosyncratic but wonderful OTP in that phase, and I'll still stand by it. Think about it, if you could get Hotohori and Yui together it would solve everybody's problems! Setting them up on the date would be hard, sure, but if you managed it, I could really see them falling for each other...)
