The hole in our cat was not the suspected parasite, but rather an abscessed cat-fight wound, so I'm doubly glad someone had some sense of urgency about it (and I didn't even make Mom late for anything). This kind of thing is why I would not myself choose to have an outdoor cat, but that's the way my parents roll, so I have to accept some things.
Anyway, she got worm medicine and the vet sent us home with antibiotics to give her twice a day. In a couple of weeks once the wound is healed we'll take her back in for vaccinations and spaying.
She was actually a surprisingly good sport about the whole thing. She did seem scared during the car ride and made clear her displeasure with the parts of the vet visit you'd expect, but when she got home she didn't give me any trouble about the liquid antibiotic and is pretty much back to normal and affectionate.
The cat also got a name out of this whole thing, albeit an ironical one. Mom knows how I am and asked for Japanese translations of appropriate words, and she finally liked my suggestion of "Nanashi" ("No-Name"). So now I can start calling the cat Nana-chan...
