A window into my language-geek life
Oct. 30th, 2010 10:28 pmThere's a Lexus commercial I keep seeing now that includes the phrase "the breakthroughs we innovate." This has bothered me so much that this evening I actually turned to Wiktionary, according to which no, that doesn't make sense, but according to Merriam-Webster it does. I still think using "innovate" as a transitive verb sounds awkward, and of course a Lexus commercial is going for that high-brow educated feel that leaves no excuse for clunky language, and I let it bug me way too much.
On the crazy Fushigi Yuugi fanfic front, it's still buzzing in my head and I'm planning to take it and run with it for NaNoWriMo here in about twenty-five hours or so. Until that starts I've still just been brainstorming and jotting summary, but I think good stuff is getting done. (If it goes according to plan, Mitsukake will do something important, thank you! Er, still working on Chiriko, tho... ^_^;;) It's weird, there are things I have forgotten from our previous plans, so I'm making them up from scratch, and then what I just made up seems oddly familiar, but I have no idea if it was what we had been planning or not, or if it's just deja vu.
In other news, Thursday the dentist seemed to kind of hit the Tim Taylor threshold with my braces and decided to get some of these errant and rotated bicuspids wired in in whatever way possible, so with new pressures being introduced just a few days ago, my mouth hurts. Eating anything that must be chewed with detectable pressure before swallowing is an ordeal. (That being the case, I think I'll skip lunch with the Unitarians tomorrow and just come home for some potato soup or spaghetti-o's.) It'll get better, though; in the past it seemed to calm down after the first week or so...
